Austin Travel Guide

Austin Travel Guide

Where to Eat / Sleep / Drink in Austin might seem like just a quick google search away, but that’s not the case. Austin is MASSIVE. And if you are heading over you don’t want to stress about where you are going or where you are staying, so I’ve done the work for you and compiled this handy little guide.

We headed out to Austin to set up the American website. The travel time was way too long (18hrs!) just to do work so we extended the trip and had some fun too.

We stayed at the Austin Motel, a little vintage style motel on South Congress. The motel opened its doors in 1938 and has a pretty interesting history. The motel has a restaurant, Joann’s Fine Foods, an outdoor bar and a pool! It wasn’t warm enough in Feb for us to take a dip but we did make full use of the outdoor bar - perfect for people watching.

All I really do while I am on holiday is eat and drink so heres a list of my favourite places to check out while in the city. Austin is a hub for Tex Mex food and to be honest that is my idea of heaven so if thats your vibe you are in luck!

Where To Eat

Magnolia Cafe - 24 hour diner serving up american and tex mex breakfast classics. First (but definitely not the last) time I tried Migas. Also the pancakes were dope. Cannot recommend enough.
Joann’s Fine Foods - The restaurant at Austin Motel is well worth a visit. We landed at 9pm so by the time we got to the motel we were exhausted. Luckily we popped down for some awesome tacos & guac.

Home Slice - Straight up classic pizza joint. Served by the slice and a local favourite. Want pizza on the go? This is your best option.

The Vegan Nom - Hands down the best vegan tex mex I have ever eaten. If you like that shit you HAVE. TO. GO.

Arlos Food Truck - Vegan comfort food served till late. Food trucks are one of the best things about Austin! You can literally get anything. The tots and bbq burger from Arlos is a must have.

Via 313 Pizza - I never knew I needed detroit style pizza until I hit this place up. Fuck me it is good. Deep dish and delicious. I can't recommend this more for pizza lovers.

Plow Burger - Vegan burger place, just got an uber eats of this but it was fucking tasty.

Coopers Old Time Pit BBQ - I couldnt go to texas without hitting up a bbq joint. Slow cooked meat to perfection with amazing bbq beans and a pickleback chaser. Amazing.

Torchys Tacos - chain of tex mex fast food joints. A local favourite and rightly so. Cant go wrong with a Torchys! No but seriously - you need to check them out if you see one while in town.

Where to Drink

The Liberty - chill dive bar with a good outdoor area outback. A cat lives out front under their sign and is friendly.. so thats something extra.

Grackle - Sweet dive bar, good vibe.

The Brew and Brew - Coffee shop that also sells beer. Nice hangout spot in east of the city. The porch will be a nice place to sit and have a beer once all the building work opposite has been finished.

Hotel San Jose - Check out the patio for some cocktails, or grab a seat by the pool if its quiet.

The Driskil - One of the oldest buildings in Austin. Sit in the lobby and grab a pint surrounded buy an insanely grand building.
